Netballers train with elite players
Last Saturday, 40 keen netball players, selected from our U12 & U13 A, B and C teams, travelled to Surrey Sports Park in Guildford for a Surrey Storm experience day. The teams were coached by Tamsin Greenway (Surrey Storm coach who has 51 England Caps) and Amy Flanagan (Superleague Surrey Storm player).
The girls really enjoyed meeting two of the top netball players in the country and hearing all about what it is like to be an elite athlete in the world of netball. They learned about sports nutrition, fitness training and testing, the hours involved in netball training and the fact that the players do all this around their full time jobs.
The girls experienced fitness testing and were put through their paces. For the UI2s the focus was on defending and for the U13s it was attacking third play. There was also some recording of match play followed by video analysis. The girls coped extremely well outside in the bitter cold and wind.
After an overnight stay in Guildford the teams travelled a short distance to Godalming to play against Waverley Vipers, a local netball club. The teams were of a similar standard which meant tight, hard fought matches. The girls were able to try out their newly acquired skills. Godstowe won all four matches!
