What is truth?

This is just one of many thought provoking questions that 6C had to consider during their English lessons last half term. When we were invited to write essays using the title ‘Does Poetry Contain Truth?’, we weren’t entirely sure where to begin. However, eight of the girls in 6C took on the challenge and entered the Shrewsbury School’s prestigious essay competition.

As an English department, we were incredibly proud to receive an invitation for all eight of the girls to attend an awards ceremony being held at Shrewsbury on Thursday 9th February. The girls who had entered the competition were Violet, Ella, Amelia, Athena, Neeva, Rosanna, Kimberley and Ally.

Despite the long journey on the minibus, the day was full of memorable experiences. The girls had the privilege of taking part in senior school lessons for Philosophy and English. They studied high level texts, challenged their own thinking and learnt interesting facts.

Finally, it was time for the awards to be announced. The group gathered in an auditorium with groups from four other schools. Every entrant received a certificate for their commended effort. Godstowe cheered with delight when the Year 6 winner was announced and it was our very own Neeva. Sadly Neeva could not attend the trip as she had headed off on the ski trip. We were very proud of her and couldn’t wait to announce this news and hand out certificates in our celebration assembly on Friday 24th February.

Let’s see what challenges this competition brings next year…
